Tobiloba Awogbemila

I paint and also photograph. But really, I listen.

With oil on canvas, I build texture that holds memory. With a camera, I capture light that holds truth. Both are my languages. Both speak to what is often invisible, the weight of silence, the quiet of surrender, the moments before and after everything changes.

My paintings carry thick impasto, layered like time itself. My photographs strip away color, leaving only feeling. Together, they form a practice that does not shout.

Higher Than Me

I created this self-portrait with my son as a reflection of the kind of father I hope to be. As I lifted him into the air, I realized the moment carried a deeper meaning beyond play or affection. It became a symbol of responsibility, sacrifice, and the silent promise many fathers make to their children, to help them rise higher than they ever could on their own.
